How to adopt a skincare routine during summer

Updated: Oct 31, 2023

During the summer months, longer hours of daylight and sun exposure can make our skin dehydrated and damaged. Depending on where you are, humidity and warm temperatures can increase bacterial infections from excessive sweating. Air conditioning can dehydrate the skin by removing moisture from the skin’s surface, leaving its outer layers dry and itchy. ARLENE skincare range provides the perfect products to nourish and illuminate your skin in the summer. Here are some top tips to keep your skin protected whilst on holiday, at home and outside.

1. Always moisturise your skin: Warm weather increases water loss from the face and body, making the skin appear more dehydrated. A lack of moisture in your skin can cause two extremes- either oily or very dry appearing skin. To overcome this, it is important to moisturise regularly and use a certain type of moisturiser. It is advised that oil-free and non-comedogenic moisturisers are the most effective. According to Jeanette Black (a board-certified dermatologist in Los Angeles), oil-free moisturisers contain other ingredients to hydrate the skin. These include glycerin and hyaluronic acid which are absorbable and create a lighter effect on the skin’s surface. The impact of using a lighter moisturiser is that it prevents the clogging of pores and a greasy texture. To create a duo effect of keeping your skin hydrated and protected by UV light, find a moisturiser with SPF in it. This way your skin can have double the protection from sun damage and hydration.

What ARLENE products can help me?

ARLENE Skin Enhancing Face Serum is the perfect product to correct moisture levels. It contains hyaluronic acid that helps the skin hold on to water, creating a plumper and firm effect. It also provides natural oils such as grapeseed, passionfruit, and avocado, that work together to improve skin elasticity. Another key ingredient is Buriti seed oil. Rich in Vitamin E and A, Buriti seed oil seeks to restore moisture from sun exposed skin, making it a perfect natural SPF.

2. Always use an SPF- not just when it's sunny! It is important to find a good SPF to use in all seasonal months to combat overexposure to the sun. Although the sun is good for us in many ways, it can leave devastating effects on the skin such as sunburn, premature ageing (by the appearance of wrinkles) and skin cancer. A blog published by Harvard Medical School in 2018 stated people should wear an SPF of at least 30 for a 97% protection rate against UVB light. Furthermore, a study conducted by Lazovich and Vogel (2011) investigated how preventative sunscreen is in preventing melanoma (a form of skin cancer). Their results conducted that optimal use of sunscreen is strongly associated with a decreased risk of melanoma. This was founded on a population-based study, considering factors such as type of SPF, amount, application, and routine. Therefore, it is important to keep yourself protected and to give your skin the fresh complexion it deserves.

After you have found a suitable SPF, Arlene recommends using her Renewing Face Cream to hydrate and nourish your skin after a day in the sun. Its natural and organic properties work together to restore the collagen and elastin that have been depleted by the sun. Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A) and Vitamin E are two ingredients that contain antioxidant properties to protect skin cells and membranes from environmental damage. Its ingredients are designed to reduce any fine lines, wrinkles or sun spots caused by UV light.

3. Cleanse and Exfoliate: Cleansing your face after a day in the sun is a vital step to remove any sweat, dust or dirt contributing to the build-up of clogged pores and blemishes. Afterwards, exfoliating is important to remove any pollutants or impurities from the skin’s surface. Adrienne Santos-Longhurst (2018) writes about the importance of exfoliation in her blog for Healthline. She claims the long-term effect of exfoliation is that it can increase collagen production. This is another great way to maintain skin elasticity.

What ARLENE products can help me?

When it comes to cleansing, ARLENE Soothing Face Wash is an exquisite product to gently soothe and remove any external impurities. Rich in Vegetable Glycerine, the ingredient eliminates pore congestion and brightens skin complexion. After exfoliation, ARLENE Purifying Hyaluronic Face Mask is perfect for removing any excess oils. Containing green French clay, the clay deeply cleanses the skin, removing dirt and pollutants to create clean and fresh-looking skin.

4. Wear less makeup during the day: It may be tempting to apply a full face of make-up when out in the sunshine, however, it does have its repercussions. Wearing a lot of make-up has the effect of congesting the skin, building up bacteria to form breakouts. Habiba Katsha (2022) discusses a 2019 study investigating the effect of temperature on the skin. She discusses how an increase in temperature can result in greater water loss from the skin and sweat production, as well as a reduced skin pH. It is important to restrain from wearing too much make-up to prevent these effects from worsening.
